Bobotie

Whole bobotie in a take away container.

Bobotie has been called the national dish of South Africa.

It’s mildly spiced beef mince, like a meatloaf, but more moist which is likely due to the egg top.

A mid week, comforting meal, we eat it with rice that’s yellow, punctuated by raisins. Bobotie is also often accompanied by a sambal salad. Pickle or chutney is a welcome addition.

There are many variations of bobotie and that is testament to it’s popularity. Our version is simple. It is the method Lamese’s mum made, which in turn is based on her mother’s recipe. It is not our tradition to put fruit, jam or chutney in with the mince mainly because the rice already contains sweet raisins and also because kids are not fans of surprise fruit in their dinner.

We like to keep it simple so everyone can customise their own plate with their favourite accompaniments.

PS

The origins of bobotie are debated here, as well as many other places on the internet.

The photo shows bobotie in our Family Size. You can pop them straight in the oven to heat. Then when empty, the containers are compostable.
